East 1400 Road bridge over Wakarusa River to be closed March 30 for rehabilitation project

The bridge carrying East 1400 Road (old Louisiana Street alignment) over the Wakarusa River will be closed beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, for a rehabilitation project.  The bridge is located on East 1400 Road approximately ¾-mile north of North 1100 Road. Douglas County Public Works anticipates the project will be completed and the bridge reopened to traffic by June 13, 2020.

Amid an unprecedented COVID-19 global pandemic, Moody’s Investors Service upgraded Douglas County’s bond rating from AA1 to the top rating of AAA, the highest possible rating an entity can receive, with a stable outlook.

According to Moody’s, the upgrade reflects the county’s trend of stable financial operations and strong operating reserves coupled with low debt and pension burdens. The strong credit factors are further supported by the county’s conservative budgeting practices that also mitigate the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

In his new book, “Shakespeare Through Letters,” David Bergeron draws links between the two types of characters, using letters that are read aloud or at least mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays to give insight into such dramatis personae as Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet and Macbeth.

LAWRENCE – In the case of Stephen T. Johnson’s new children’s book, “Music Is …” (Simon & Schuster), form preceded function. The idea for accordion-style pages was the crucial catalyst for Johnson’s thinking, according to the Caldecott Medal-winning lecturer in the University of Kansas School of Architecture & Design.
