The Rev. Beth Hodgson, 77, and her husband, Willis, 78, of Plum Creek United Methodist Church died Sunday afternoon in a single-car accident on Plum Creek Road.
Emergency units were sent to Plum Creek Road about one-quarter mile north of 335th Street at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in response to reports of a one-vehicle rollover accident in which the vehicle was on fire, according to a news release from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. Both people inside were reported dead at the scene.
On-scene investigations revealed that a 2007 Ford Taurus was southbound on Plum Creek Road and left the roadway, overturned and caught fire.
The couple lived in rural Parker on Beth’s Diehm’s (Hodgson) family farm, said Osawatomie First United Methodist pastor the Rev. Marti McDougal.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” McDougal said. “They were just always together since he’s been retired.”
The couple previously had lived in Osawatomie for a long while, and their children went to Osawatomie schools. Beth Hodgson had also pastored in Mound City and Blue Mound.
Their daughter, Jada, is an attorney with her own practice in La Cygne and is pastor at the Princeton United Methodist Church.
Their son, Wayne, is a counselor at Trojan Elementary School.
The Methodist district superintendent has been in touch with the Plum Creek church leadership, McDougal said, and will cover the congregation with an interim pastor or speakers.
“I’ve let them know I’m here, close by and ready to be there for them if they have any pastoral needs,” she said.
